Tips for Choosing Carpeting

Tips for Choosing the Right Carpeting in Your Home

When you’re ready to pick out new carpeting for your home, you may be overwhelmed by all the available options. Your budget, of course, may be the most important factor in choosing carpet for your home, but there are other carpet features to consider.

Lifestyle and durability

If you live in a home with no children and no pets, and you don’t mind adopting a “no shoes in the house” policy, a plush carpet may be a good fit for you. But frieze-cut carpet is a better choice for high traffic rooms and homes with pets.

The fibers in frieze carpeting angle different directions, so they’re more resistant to matting and hide footprints, paw prints, and vacuum tracks. The fibers are also tightly wound, which makes them better able to withstand damage from pet claws. Berber carpet, however, has tight loops that are susceptible to snags from pet claws.

Future plans

If you’re planning to sell your home in the near future, an economical carpet in a neutral color may be a better choice than a more expensive carpet. Prices may vary several dollars per square foot, so while you want your home to be attractive to buyers, you may want to save some money by installing mid-grade carpet.

If you have hard floors and want to quickly update a small room with carpet before putting your home on the market, carpet tiles might be a good solution. They’re easy to install, and no carpet pad is required.

Allergies

Carpets are made from materials that include wool, nylon, olefin and polyester – a non-allergenic material. If anyone in your home suffers from allergies, they may also be allergic to certain carpet fibers.

Cost factors

The cost of carpeting a perfectly square or rectangular room will be lower than carpeting a space with recessed areas, hallways, and stairs. Installation is calculated not only by square footage but also by the labor involved in making cuts and the overall difficulty of installation.

These are just a handful of factors that may influence your carpet preferences. Discuss your needs with a professional installer to get the right carpet for your home.
